Tropical Beach Tag Tutorial

Hi and welcome! The summer holiday is coming to an end and this past week has been busy since I tried to do a lot of fun things with the kids. We spent as much time outdoors as possible, and went to an big outdoor museum, to the pool, to a lake and to different playgrounds. Anton and I also went to see the Big Friendly Giant, which he loved.

It is Monday and this week at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge we are having a Summer Fun challenge. I hope you can join us!

I was thinking of tropical beaches, palm trees and turquoise oceans and made a colourful tag. It is fun to think out different ways of making sand, and for this tag I made a glittery mix, which looks very sparkly in real life. I used Tim Holtz new Tropical set by Sizzix for most of the shapes on this tag, and was happy to see that it had a Delicious Monster leaf, not only do I like the shape of that leaf, it is also quite a common site in South Africa, and the name is just the best.

First I mixed Antique Linen and a little Ground Espresso paint into white Texture Paste, until I was happy with the colour. Next, I mixed quite a lot of Distress Glitter Dust into the paste, which is just perfect for sparkly sand. The paste was smeared on a tag die cut from watercolour paper. 28 Lilac Lane sequins by May Flaum were pressed into the sand and I added more glitter at the bottom of the tag. Finally, I sprinkled micro beads beads in a few areas. Let dry.

Die cut the palm tree twice from watercolour paper and once from burlap. Die cut three leaves, also from watercolour paper. Apply just a little Distress Micro Glaze to the shapes with your finger.

I also die cut flowers, but didn't add glaze to them. Paint all the shapes with Distress Inks, by smearing the inks on a craft sheet, misting with water and picking up with a paint brush. Pine Needles is one of my least used Distress Inks, but it is a lovely green and a great base for both the palm tree and the leaves, with the addition of some other shades of green.

Smear a little Distress Micro Glaze on the top part of tag, and then paint it.

Glue the burlap to the one watercolour tree and cut the top off the other palm tree. It was adhered with foam dots for dimension, shaping the leaves a little. I also added some sequins, as coconuts. The Distress Micro Glaze adds a great texture to the palm tree.

The words were die cut with the Vacation Words Script set and painted yellow.

I wish you could see the cool glittery texture of this beach in real life. The tiny flowers from the Tropical set are so cute, and very useful for many different projects. I added a dot of Champagne Stickles to each one.

The leaves and flowers were given some shape and then layered with foam dots in between.

One of my favourite parts of this tag is the sequins. It is a great neutral mix and they give such wonderful shine. I have an old love of sequins, and still have a little bag of sequins that I collected as a child and didn't have the heart to use up.

I hope you will join us in our Summer Fun challenge. A random participant will win a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp. You have until Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in.
