I made an art journal page in my Small Creative Journal this week and had fun experimenting with some watercolour techniques to get interesting textures. After having done a salt technique on a scrapbooking layout a few weeks ago, I wanted to play more with this technique since it was several years ago since I last used it. I also used cling wrap and I will do a tutorial on this a little later, I was in a bit of a hurry this week.
I worked on watercolour paper and started out by laying down a wash on the background, using two shades of blue, Burnt Umber and a bit of purple. The darker colour is a mix of Ultramarine and Burnt Umber. Salt was sprinkled into the wet paint, not right away, but before it dried completely. As you can see, the effect is more dramatic than on my Watercolour Words layout, where the paint dried too quickly on the smooth paper surface.
The ground was done by first painting a hill, dropping blue paint right into the brown. I had already prepared a piece of cling wrap, and pressed it into the paint. Leave until the paint is dry. I love this technique.
When the paint was dry, I stamped my favourite bird stamp, misting the stamp with water after inking. I also stamped the corners with the Specks stamp, using Jet Black ink.
I really like this Tim Holtz sentiment stamp and have used the larger version of it before, but I don't think I had inked up this smaller version.
The Wildflowers were die cut from old book paper and from white paper, and inked slightly. I painted a shadow along the one side of the flowers.
The title was die cut from a piece left-over from experimenting, and from white paper, which was used as a shadow. Underneath, there is a piece of dyed cheesecloth that I found on my desk.
At the bottom of the page, I stamped more specks, and an alphabet border.
