Sizzix Modern Surrealist Blog Hop

Hello and welcome to my post for the Sizzix Marisa Pawelko Modern Surrealist blog hop! Hop with us today to check out who has been making what with this new unique and snazzy collection. Marisa's designs will put a little sparkle and extra pizzazz into your day. With the versatile Sizzix Originals dies and the Sizzix SophistiCut Machine you can make fun and easy jewelry, add some perk to your fashion, brighten up your space with a little lively décor- and so much more. There is a great prize to be won too!

I made a bracelet and a tag (you'll find the tag below). The Big City die is one of my favorites among the Modern Surrealist line, I enjoy using city line type of images, even though I am ambivalent when it comes to cities, liking some parts of big cities, very much disliking others. After chasing around for faux leather like crazy, this was the best I could find locally. I was aiming for something a little brighter and a little sturdier.

The SophistiCut is such a cute machine! It is meant to be used together with the Originals and On The Edge size of dies, together with the two cutting pads that come with the machine. Here you can see the sandwich: cutting pad, die facing up, material to be die cut and the second cutting pad. Since these are steel-rule dies, you can cut thick materials with them.

I started by die cutting the city from dark purple faux leather. Save the negative for another project. Aren't those small buildings great?

Next, use the Fashion Cuff to die cut the base for the bracelet, using cream/light grey faux leather.

I placed the city on the base, not adhering it yet, it was just to get an idea of where the sentiment could go. Picking one of my favourite sentiments by Dina Wakley and stamping with Jet Black ink.

I wanted to add some detail to the city and stamped my favourite Tim Holtz alphabet stamp with Stazon Cotton White.

I also stamped birds in the sky, before gluing the city to the base.

The faux leather I used was a little too thin, so I set eyelets in the holes, to prevent them from tearing. I simply tied with an elastic cord, there are other ways of doing this, but I was going for quick and easy.

These dies are certainly not only for jewelry and accessories, but also great for any type of papercrafting and mixed media. I made a tag, for some extra inspiration, using the same Big City die, and a bunch of other dies from the collection. The background paper is gelli printed using dry embossed paper and Dina Wakley's paints. It was a leftover from a tutorial I posted on the Sizzix blog last week.

This Zippy Zipper die is such fun, and I wanted it to look like it was opening the night time sky, the gelli print being dusk over the city. The zipper was die cut from grungeboard and then once again from foil tape. The foil tape details were distressed with black paint and the zipper was painted green. When dry, I sanded and scratched it and inked with Walnut Stain. The foil details were adhered on top of the grungeboard. I cut away the gelli printed paper and backed the tag with a second tag die cut from Prima paper.

The Thought Talk Bubbles die consists of four speech bubbles, always a fun element to add. They were die cut from Mirrored Sheet, which looks just like a real mirror and I added a rub-on on top. The speech bubble doubles as a cloud.

The background was stamped with a New York ticket stamp and a date stamp, using Jet Black ink. I also added some tiny squares, which were leftovers from the Chained die. Instead of a ribbon, I used tissue tape.

The city was die cut from grungeboard, painted black, sanded and inked with Walnut Stain. The border under the city comes from the Chained die, which has three different chains. I covered grungeboard with foil tape and die cut the chains from it. It was distressed with black paint. The little squares are the inside pieces from another of the chains.

The rest of the rub-on was placed on the background, together with three more squares.
