Hello and welcome! We have another fun challenge this week at
Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog and a special guest, the fabulous
Tammy Tutterow. If you have never seen
Tammy's tutorials, you must head over to her blog and look at all of them, she shares great techniques and the tutorials are wonderful. Our challenge this week is to be inspired by one of Tammy's tutorials.
I've been in the mood for autumn project lately, as you might have noticed on the blog. Recently, I got the new
Tim Holtz Sizzix
3-D Luminary die, love it! For this week, I decided to make an autumn luminary. I was inspired by two of Tammy's tutorials:
Frosted Film Transfer and
Melt Art Tissue Wrap Jeweled Leaves. Transfer techniques are so much fun, and I loved the idea of using
Frosted Film for a transfer, especially in combination with the luminary. UTEE is another favourite of mine and Tammy's UTEE covered tissue leaves are simply gorgeous and perfect for an autumn project. Tammy is also the design team leader at
Sizzix, check out
this post too.
I used
Graphic 45 French Country 8 x 8 patterned papers for the transfers, since they have a lovely autumn/harvest theme. Each of the four windows has a different transferred image. I love how they turned out and it looks even better in the dark with a battery tea candle inside the luminary. I wanted the windows to be a bit thicker than the Frosted Film and placed the transfers on pieces of acetate, using thin adhesive along the edges, that doesn't show.
The luminary was die cut from manila cardstock. It is an XL die, so you need the
Extended Cutting Pads, together with your
Big Shot or
Vagabond. You can use thin chipboard too, but nothing thicker, because it has quite a few fold lines, which won't work with thick material. I wanted my luminary to be metallic looking and warm and painted it with
Tarnished Brass Distress Paint. When the paint was dry, I stamped it with a
favourite script stamp, and a
swirl stamp for the roof. After making all the folds (using a bone folder), I smeared some Black Soot paint along all the edges.
The leaves were made pretty much the same way as in
Tammy's tutorial, except that I used autumn colours of Distress Stain, instead of only Peeled Paint. I also skipped the step of inking the edges brown, since I rather wanted to keep the autumn colours bright. Always be very careful when you use UTEE, it gets very very hot. I used both
Mini Tattered Leaves and
Autumn Gatherings to die cut my leaves.
Tattered Banners were die cut from manila cardstock, inked and shaped. I used Chit Chat stickers for the sentiments.
The shiny, transparent tissue leaves are so pretty and fit well together with the translucent Frosted Film windows.
Another photo of the leaves, it is hard to capture how pretty they are in real life.
I took a photo of some of the leaves before adhering them to the luminary. You will also see some smaller leaves. I die cut shapes from shrink plastic to use up the last of the UTEE in my melting pot. I'll be using them on a project in a couple of weeks.
The luminary looks so pretty in the dark with a battery operated tea light inside. I was happy to finally find some battery operated tea candles, after having searched for them in at least five different shops. You can of course not use real candles in a luminary made of paper. My tripod was out of reach when I took evening photos of the luminary, so this isn't perfect, but I hope you get at least an idea of what it looks like. The frosted transfer windows with the different patterns are so pretty with the candle behind them.
I hope you will join us this week! As every week, one random participant wins a $50 gift voucher from
Simon Says Stamp. That
Luminary die is in stock :)
Happy autumn crafting!!
