2022 Art Journal Page with Masking

Hi crafters! Happy New Year! This is my first post of the year and I am looking forward to 2022 and the creative adventures that it will bring.

We have a 'Something New' theme at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog this week. Since it is the first Monday of a new month the team is showcasing products by a specific designer/company and this week it is Carabelle Studio. You can find their gorgeous stamps, stencils and other products here. You don't have to use their products to join in the challenge, but it is always fun if you do.

This month Estelle Palumbo aka Atouscrap is our guest designer. If you haven’t visited her blog before, I hope you will do so.

I usually make an art journal page as my first project of the year. This is a one-layer page done in my Small Creative Flip Journal. Masking and shading gives it the appearance of being dimensional or several layers. You can use the techniques for cards and tags too.

Start by inking the background with Distress Ink in neutral shades.

Stamp labels from Simon Says Stamp Mixed Labels on the background with brown ink. Let some of them hang off the edge.

Stamp the same labels on Simon Says Stamp Masking Paper and cut out.

Mist with water and water droplets. Let dry. Leave the masks in place.

Remove the masks and your labels will still be in the original inked color.

Add shading to the labels with a black pencil. I also added color to the bubbles with pencils, using Faber Castell Polychromos pencils. I worked quickly and didn't aim for a perfect result.

This quote from Simon Says Stamp Document It is designed to fit the lines on this label from Mixed Labels. The sentiments were stamped with black ink.

I inked up the two words first, stamped and cleaned the stamp. Then ink the last three words. This is a simple way of stamping a long one-line sentiment in two lines.

Stories are magic for sure. The sentiment comes from Mixed Labels.

I liked these two simple sentences together.

In a close-up, you can see that I colored the bubbles fast and added the highlights in the same way. I also added white dots on the background.

  1. Wow! Your card has so much dimension that when I saw it I thought the bubbles were acrylic and the labels glued on. I love the colors and all the interest in your composition.
