Layers of ink - Winter Butterfly Tutorial by Anna-Karin Evaldsson.

About two weeks ago we had very cold weather (-18C). We had had a pretty rough day and in the evening something fluttered by in the living room. My son had thought that he had seen a butterfly a couple of days earlier, but we could hardly believe our eyes when we saw that it was indeed a butterfly which was flying around. It made its home in our Christmas tree and over the course of more than a week, we saw it daily. It was magical. In the middle of winter, with so many degrees below zero outdoors. I had to document it in my art journal.

I had a page in my 8x8 Dylusions journal which had been coated with gesso and painted with watered-down Distress Paint.

I applied texture paste mixed with a little brown paint through the Simon Says Stamp Just Trees stencil.

The tree from Tim Holtz Winter Watercolors 2 was stamped on a journal card.

I added some script and swirls from Tim's The Poinsettia.

I picked a butterfly from the Flutter set, which looked a lot like ours, stamped it on a journal card and colored it with colored pencils.

Stamp the background with swirls and the Simon Says Stamp Old Letter Background stamp.

I added some Design Tape to the background and stamped sentiments cut into strips.

The butterfly was placed in its favorite place, our tree, and I added gold sequins to the tree.

Labels were stamped with green ink using the Simon Says Stamp Mixed Labels stamp set.

This sentiment comes from Simon Says Stamp Document It. It is a good reminder for the new year.

I also used a piece of left-over Backdrops paper, tearing it to reveal the music paper at the back. The title was stamped with stamps from Simon Says Stamp Forest Scenery and Thoughtful Flowers.

The magical butterfly itself.

  1. That is a truly amazing story Anna! What a blessing! Your art journal page is incredible & I love all the mixed media look. I'm desiring to get started on mixed media, but do not think I have the creative imagination/ability to put it all together & have it look good. I'll see...

  2. Thank you so much Teri! I hope you will start exploring mixed media. It is a lot of fun and not meant to be perfect, which I really like.
