Card Patterns sketch #160

Saturday and time for another Card Patterns sketch! I hope you can play along with us this week, check out the work of the rest of the DT here. This week we are sponsored by Prickley Pear stamps. Here’s the great sketch by Michelle:

And my card:

I die cut the focal panel from watercolour paper and stamped the Tulip Fairy with Versafine Onyx Black and clear embossed the image. Then it was coloured with Distress Inks smeared on my craft sheet and misted with Perfect Pearls and water (Dusty Concord, Scattered Straw, Bundled Sage, Pumice Stone). I used a watercolour pencil for the skin areas. The leaves were die cut from grungepaper, painted cream, coated with Glossy Accents and sprinkled with green glitter.

The background is a leftover piece of watercolour paper coloured with Distress Inks and water. It was stamped repeatedly with the sweet heart background stamp using Lavender Jenni Bowlin ink. The purple strip is Core’dinations paper which was embossed and sanded.

For the sentiment I die cut a tattered banner, inked it a bit and added a rub-on.

Thank you for looking!

CSI case file #14: Spring Day

Hello everyone! Time for another CSI:Color, Stories, Inspiration case file, this one is a gorgeous soft colour palette. Check out the site to see the work of the rest of the DT, wonderful variation of layouts. Here’s the case file:

From the evidence items I used: sandy texture, sanding, ruffles, animal accents, and wet medium. And from the testimony items: I wrote a haiku – have never done that before, it was fun. My layout is also about childhood memories.

For the background, I applied gesso with a palette knife through a wood grain stencil, fun textured effect which fit with the photo. The two pieces of Core’dinations cardstock have been dry embossed and sanded. The journaling block doily was white embossed on vellum. The chickens were stamped with brown ink and coloured with Distress Ink, water and Perfect Pearls.

The branch was die cut from grungeboard, painted green and embossed with Vintage Photo Distress embossing powder. The two birds were stamped and embossed with Antique Linen Distress embossing powder, creating a sandy looking texture.

The title is stamped on a Tattered Banner die cut.

The flowers were stamped, embossed and a bit more colour was sponged onto them.

The little haiku translates: ‘A beautiful spring day, Daffodils and Tulips, many memories are awakened’. I journaled more on the tag tucked in behind the one embossed panel. I used a fun way of journaling that I like to sometimes do on childhood photos. I wrote about all the details I can see in the photo, the glass plates that I used to love and on which we often ate pancakes, the glasses we are drinking from, our clothing made by my mom (blouses with strawberries), the fact that it must have been Easter due to the Daffodils on the table, the ties in my hair which were my favourites, and memories from the place in the garden where we are sitting. I also added some thoughts about our ages, that my mom is holding the camera, and that we had been eating ice-cream cake (I saw this from another photo from the same occasion).

Thank you for visiting! Have a happy weekend! I will be back later today with this week's Card Patterns card.

12 tags of 2012 April

Happy Easter to everyone! Today I have my version of Tim’s 12 tags of 2012 April tag to share. Here’s my tag:

I love the Branch Tree die and use it often. It was die cut from grungeboard and because I wanted my tree to be a bit lighter, I painted it with cream acrylic paint first. When dry, I applied embossing ink to it and then sprinkled the tips of the branches and the base of the tree with Peeled Paint Distress embossing powder and the rest of the tree with Vintage Photo.

The four little birds were also die cut from grungeboard, inked with different shades of blue Distress Inks, Brushed Corduroy and Wild Honey. Then I coated them with Glossy Accents and sprinkled a little bit of glitter on their stomachs.

The embossing folder was stamped with Archival ink Coffee and a mirror text stamp and then the tag was embossed. I love the effect of the non stamped embossed parts. The embossed parts were inked with Shabby Shutters and Peeled Paint and the rest of the tag with Tumbled Glass, Broken China, Frayed Burlap and Brushed Corduroy, and then dipped into a bit of misted water on my craft sheet. The lace was dyed with Brushed Corduroy and misted with copper Perfect Pearls and water.

I added a piece Vintage Lace die cut from kraft core cardstock as grass.

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you will have a fabulous weekend!

Faux-rust tutorial

To celebrate that I am on the Sizzix design team (see this post), I decided to do a tutorial. I call the main technique I use ‘faux-rust’. My son loves cars, so I made a little wall hanging for his room. Here it is:

My son loves this project. His first reaction when he saw the big car was to say 'car dirty', which I think was a pretty good observation. It is indeed meant to look rusty, dirty and distressed. This car has been through a lot.
This is a long and rather technique intensive tutorial, the techniques can also be used on their own and on totally different projects. To avoid using too many photos, some of the photos include more than one step.
Supplies:
Dies: Sizzix Tim Holtz Alteration dies: Old Jalopy Bigz die, Mini Old Jalopy Movers & Shapers, Holiday Lamppost Bigz die, Mini Tickets Movers & Shapers, Sizzlits Filmstrip Frames, Base Tray.
Stamps: Tim Holtz Stamper’s Anonymous: Urban Tapestry, Mini Ornates, Odds and Ends, School Desk, Steampunk, Mini Muse.
Paint: Ranger Adirondack paint dabbers: Juniper, Sailboat Blue, Espresso, Pitch Black, Sandal, Silver, Picket Fence; Distress crackle paint Weathered Wood, Rock Candy and Picket Fence.
Inks: Distress inks: Walnut Stain, Old Paper, Weathered Wood, Faded Jeans, Frayed Burlap, Black Soot; embossing ink; Distress Stain: Antique Linen, Pumice Stone; Archival Ink Jet Black.
Alcohol inks: Juniper, Bottle, Stonewashed, Denim, Meadow, Lettuce, Latte, Ginger, Espresso
Embossing powders: Clear Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE), Verdigris
Adhesive: Glossy Accents, Studio-Multimedium Matte
Papers etc: grungeboard, Ranger Inkssential clear shrink plastic and manila cardstock; Core’dinations Tim Holtz black kraft core cardstock; old book page.
Tools: Big Shot machine, heat gun, sandpaper, scratch tool, mini mister, mini attacher
Other: Perfect pearls, mica pieces, cardboard, Tim Holtz Ideology mini filmstrips, Tim Holtz Ideology game spinners.

Die cut the Old Jalopy from grungeboard.

Paint all the pieces brown with Espresso paint dabber. Let dry.

Using Sailboat Blue and Juniper paint dabbers, streak on paint from below, letting some of it mix. Don’t cover all the brown paint. The paint dabbers work great for this. Don’t squeeze too much paint onto the dabber, it works better if you leave it fairly dry. If you don't have paint dabbers, you can use use acrylic paint and a paint brush and dry brush the paint onto the car. Paint the small pieces: the license plate and the one wheel in Sandal, the other wheel Sailboat Blue and the remaining two pieces in Juniper. Don’t aim for a perfect result.
Stamp the license plate with an alphabet background stamp using Archival Jet Black ink. Stamp the same stamp using second generation stamping here and there on the car. Stamp ‘Admit One’ on the car using the same ink.

Ink a splatter stamp with embossing ink and stamp it here and there on the car. Sprinkle verdigris embossing powder on top and melt with a heat gun. This step adds a nice extra texture.
Sand the edges of all the pieces and use a scratch tool to scratch off some of the paint here and there. Ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink using and an ink blending tool.
Cover the two Juniper painted pieces in clear embossing ink and emboss them with three of four layers of clear Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel. Sprinkle a little bit of verdigris powder into the last layer. This gives the car some shiny parts too. If you don't have UTEE, you can use ordinary clear embossing powder instead, but you will need to do more layers.
To finish the car, dry brush some Pitch Black paint on the wheels. Glue all the pieces to the car with Glossy Accents. For the windows I used a piece of mica, with a fair amount of imperfections in it. I tore it a bit so that it looks like the one window is broken. Adhere to the back with Glossy Accents. Finally, I added a bit of Scattered Straw Distress Stickles to the headlight of the car. I love the combination of the rusty, matte car, the shiny UTEE pieces and the mica windows.

This car drives on a pretty unusual road, a film strip with tiny cars inside. I wanted to include some more cars because they will be fun to look at for my son. To make tiny embellishments, I love to use shrink plastic. Die cut six Mini Jalopies from clear shrink plastic, using the base tray.
Colour the cars with alcohol inks, colouring on the back. I coloured two in different shades of green (Juniper and Bottle, Meadow and Lettuce), two in shades of brown (Latte and Ginger, Espresso) and two in different shades of blue (Stonewashed, Denim). Remember that the colour will become a lot more intense when you shrink them.
I shrunk the pieces using a heat gun, but you can also do it in the oven. A wooden stamp works great to flatten them if they curl when they are heated. Dab the cars with Picket Fence dabber at the back, this is to make them a less transparent so that they will stand out more. I also coated them on the front with Glossy Accents, which gives them a more rounded and glossy appearance. On the photo, you see the back of the three top cars and the front of the three bottom cars.
Die cut the Holiday Lamppost from grungeboard. Paint it with silver dabber. Coat the lamppost with Distress crackle paint Rock Candy. I wanted relatively small crackles, so I gave it a medium thick coating. Let dry. When dry, sponge Black Soot into the cracks. Wipe off leftover ink from the paint.

Back the lamp piece with a piece of mica. You can separate mica sheets to make them thinner, but I left this one thick, since you see more imperfections then.
Die cut the film strip from black kraft core cardstock. Sand it a bit to reveal the kraft core and use a craft pick to remove the paper from the little holes.
Die cut the small and larger ticket from manila cardstock. Also cut a strip wide enough to fit behind the film strip die cut. Ink the tickets with Antique Linen Distress Stain and the strip with Pumice Stone. Flick with a bit of water and dry with a heat gun.

Ink the pieces with Frayed Burlap. Stamp the strip with the alphabet background stamp using Pumice Stone. Stamp the sentiment and the ticket on the two tickets with Jet Black ink and distress the edges a bit.
The background: Cut a piece of cardboard (mine was about 22x17 cm) and tear off some of the top layer. Tear up some old book pages and apply Studio Multimedium to the back with a paint brush: Glue them to the cardboard, but leave some of the cardboard raw. Let dry and trim of the excess.

Ink the book pages with Old Paper, Weathered Wood and Faded Jeans distress ink. Roughly paint the cardboard with Weathered Wood Distress crackle paint. Let dry. I added a little bit of Picket Fence crackle paint after the blue paint was dry (forgot to take a photo of this).

Stamp birds on the background using Archival Jet Black ink. Ink the edges and some of the cracks with Frayed Burlap and Walnut Stain.

Finally, I misted the whole background with Perfect Pearls and water, giving it a nice shine
Assemble everything. I adhered the car with foam adhesive, which makes the mica windows look even nicer. They look green on this photo, in real life they are brownish.

Glue the cars with Glossy Accents.

I also added some game spinners (love to use them as arrows) and mini stapels.

The main sentiment tag got a mini filmstrip embellishment as well as a tiny piece from an old map book.

I hope you liked the tutorial! If you have any questions, just let me know.

Big news: Sizzix DT!

Today, I have some really good news and I am so happy to be able to finally tell them. About a month ago I got an email from Tammy asking me if I wanted to be on the very first Sizzix Design Team. Yippy! I love the Sizzix dies and embossing folders, so of course I said yes! I am so very excited to be on this fabulous team. It has been really hard not to tell anyone.

You can find the announcement about the team on the Sizzix blog. There is also a fun give away on the blog. The new DT is fabulous and very diverse, and will surely bring tons of inspiration. You can find everyone's blogs here:

I have a celebration tutorial planned and was going to post it today, but it is not quite finished yet. I will post it first thing tomorrow morning. It is pretty technique intensive and I hope you will like it. Sorry to keep you waiting!

Card Patterns #159: Happy Easter

Time for another fun Card Patterns sketch. This week we are sponsored by Designed2Delight and I picked a sweet Easter image for my card. Don’t forget to check the Card Patterns blog for the awesome cards of the rest of the DT. I hope you can play along with us this week. Here’s the sketch:

And here’s my card:

I paper pieced the chickens and the butterflies (the yellow paper looks almost like feathers). The butterfly also got a bit of glitter. After die cutting the oval, I inked the top with Tumbled Glass and the bottom with Shabby Shutters. I pleated crepe paper at the back. The felt flowers and swirls were die cut. 'Glad PÃ¥sk' means 'Happy Easter', I added it with tiny rub-ons.

Thank you for visiting! Fun news and a tutorial coming tomorrow.

CSI case file 13: The sparkle in your eyes

Hello everyone! Saturday and time for another CSI:Color, Stories, Inspiration layout (they are revealed on Fridays, but due to the time difference it is night here then, so I usually post my layout on Saturday morning). Have a look at the CSI site to see the work of the rest of the DT. Debbi made another awesome case file for this week, here it is:

I had to rush my layout a bit, because I had such a busy week. Here it is:

From the evidence items I used: hearts, string, jewels, map print. From the testimony items: journaling around play, place journaling into something so that it partly sticks out. The title translates something in the line of ‘Sparkling eyes’ or ‘The sparkle in your eyes’.

This photo of my son and eye fit the combo pretty well and I used strips of dry embossed kraft core cardstock for the background. They were embossed, sanded and then stitched to a piece of background cardstock. The hearts were stamped using Archival ink French Ultramarine and Chrome Yellow.

I printed quotes about play and sprinkled them around the layout. The photo was matted on a page from a map book (I picked it up very cheap from a second hand book shop for this purpose). The photo was taken by Cheryl van Lingen.

I stamped a postcard for the journaling, but didn’t have time to write the journaling before I took the photos. It is written as a letter to my son about the importance of play and of never to stop playing.

Thank you for stopping by! I will be back later today with my Card Patterns card, and tomorrow, I have some great news, so be sure to check in again then.
