Remnants Eclectic Elements Journal

Hello Monday! And of course a new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge, this week our challenge is Patchwork. This is a really fun theme, use paper, or fabric or any other material you can think of. One of my favorite projects, is to use scrap papers and patch them together into a card or a layout, have a look at this card for an example. But this week, I wanted to use the new Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements fabric.

Remnants Eclectic Journal - Layers of ink
I love these fabrics, with the same designs as some of Tim's papers and stamps. I made a little mini-book/journal. I haven't quite decided what to put inside it yet, I might use it as a travel journal. It would be great as a gift too (but I think I want to keep it). It is 6.5 x 4.75 in (16 x 12.5 cm).

I have almost only used my sewing machine for paper for years now and it was happy to see fabric again. I wanted the covers to be soft and made them from felt and canvas, which were covered with the striped fabric. You can use batting instead of felt, but I didn't have any at home. I stitched around the edges, leaving a spine. Sorry, I forgot to take step photos for this project.

I cut out squares from different fabrics, using designs that I particularly liked, numbers, clocks, text and rulers. All the edges were frayed and they were arranged on the covers. I sew around all of them, not worrying too much about it being straight. This is the back of the journal.

A piece of grungeboard was covered with fabric, using a glue stick and when the glue was dry, I die cut a butterfly from it. I placed in the centre of the clock and attached with a brad, also adding a game spinner. Paint was rubbed into the Word Band and it was also attached with brads.

I love this curiosity definition, it is a favorite stamp of mine too. Two gears and one more game spinner finished the front of the journal.

For the insides, I cut two pieces of natural sticky-back canvas, inked and stitched around the edges and glued them to the inside covers, hiding the stitching and brads. Pages were folded into signatures and tied together with twine before attaching them to the spine, through two holes into which I set eyelets.

I tied all the strings of twine together, making sure they were tight enough.

I was very happy with how this turned out and the little journal feels great to hold, ready to be filled with something meaningful.

I hope you will have time to join us this week. As every week, one random participant wins a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp. The team also loves to look at all the entries every week and pick out projects to be spotlighted.
