Mini Book Storage Container Tutorial

Hi everyone!! I have a DIY storage tutorial to share with you today, made for the Eileen Hull Inspiration Team. I used dies from Eileen's new Sizzix Book Club collection.

When I first saw the Card Box, Planner Storage & Organizer Scoreboards die, I thought it would make a perfect storage for minibooks, and specifically for Pixi-children's books. These illustrated little books have been published in Sweden since 1955 and more than 60 million copies have been sold. Most of them contain great stories and I still have a whole stack from my own childhood. They are very cheap and can be found at many different places. But this storage container can of course be used for lots of other mini books, scrap papers, tags, stickers or anything else that you can think of.

Start by die cutting the Card Box, Planner Storage & Organizer Scoreboards die from mat board. You need four of these.

The holders are very easy to assemble. You just fold in at the score lines and first attach the short side piece. Then glue the base to the bottom. I used hot glue. If you want to make a larger container, just add more holders.

Glue the holders together. This time I used white glue and placed them under a heavy book to dry.

To get a finished look and to get a nice smooth surface to work on, I decided to glue a piece of matboard to the back and to the front of my minibook holder.

Coat everything with gesso.

I decided to do an ombre look on my holder, but you can of course use any colors. Place a stencil on top and randomly wipe off some of the paint.

I wanted another pattern and sponged white paint through a StencilGirl stencil.

You can add any images or die cuts to your holder, but I decided to go with some wild animals in combination with words, letters, birds and stars. The animals come from the StencilGirl Born to be Wild Animals stencil by Jessica Sporn, and the stamps are a mix of Darkroom Door and Tim Holtz.

Die cut labels, words and flowers using the Floral Arch & WordsBookplates, Hinges & Labels and Bookmark, Tag & Pocket sets. I used Kaisercraft Story Book papers. Stamp a title with alphabet stamps and a sentiment with a Darkroom Door stamp (I love this sentiment).

Ink the edges of the label.

The label was glued to the back of the holder, adding floral arches, words and flowers around it. Add a label over the title, to make it stand out.

The label was painted with the same paints used on the background and sanded slightly when dry. I also sanded the edges of the holder a little.

You can use any sentiment here, it all depends on what you what to store in your holder.

You might not be able to see it so well, but the stencilled images were done in black with a tiny bit of white mixed in here and there, to give it a more varied look.

The three arched sentiments come from Tim's Noble Gent set and the lovely flying birds are by Darkroom Door.

I also decorated the front of the holder, with a sentiment from the Born to be Wild Animals stencils, and more stamping.

These flowers are so cute, and you can layer and make dimensional flowers if you want to. I kept the embellishments flat on this project since the kids are going to handle it, and dimensional flowers don't do well in their little hands.

Here's a look from the top with the books placed into the holder. I organised them according to topic.

The running zebra looks so happy.

Here you might be able to see that the stenciling is done in black and grey

You could also decorate the holder by covering it with your favorite patterned paper, which would make for a quicker project. For a version using only one compartment, check out my Mini Magazine Holder.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I had such fun making this holder and always enjoy making my own storage pieces. We have lots more of these little books, so I am thinking of letting Anton decorate a couple of additional holders on his own.

Thank you so much for stopping by today!!

Happy crafting!
