I have a whole bunch of items for altering collected through the years, particularly from second hand stores. Today, I altered one of those wooden frames. You can also do the techniques on a card or in an art journal. My little frame will become a gift.

Start by coating the surface with a layer of gesso.

When dry, I first painted it light blue, but then decided that I wanted a light grey look and added another layer using a mix of Speckled Egg, Picket Fence and Hickory Smoke. Let dry.

Mix a little red Distress Paint in Texture Paste and apply with a palette knife through Tim Holtz Bricked Stencil. The red color gives us a good base color to work on, but I wanted more shades and more texture than this.

Place the stencil back and dry brush two shades of orange on the bricks. Let dry and then dry brush Ground Espresso. I also painted the brown paint around the edges, without covering the grey up completely.

Finally, rub some Sizzix Gold Luster Wax around the edges and here and there on the bricks. I really like the metallic effects of the luster waxes.

As embellishments I used a bunch of Tim Holtz idea-ology pieces. The Heirloom Roses were colored with alcohol ink. The metallic pieces were distressed with Salvaged Patina paint. Rub most of the paint off before it dries completely. I dipped the tip of the pen nib in black alcohol ink.

Glue the Sprocket Gears and other metallic pieces to the frame.

The sentiments were stamped on light grey paper that had previously been colored with Distress Ink. This one comes from Simon Says Stamp Document It.

I was happy to use the keyhole, which I had in my stash for a long time. It comes from Tim Holtz Locket Keys.

The edges have an interesting distressed look with the paint and the Luster Wax. There is some Rose Gold Luster Wax too.

I always liked to create the look of old bricks on projects. You can add more distressing and texture to the grey background too. When I was done, I wished I had stamped the background with a script stamp before doing the bricks, but that will have to wait for another project.

I hope you will join us this week in our Frame It challenge. You have a chance to win a $25 gift voucher to do some fun shopping at Simon Says Stamp. You have until Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in.
