Dimensional Flowers Mixed Media Tutorial

Hi crafters! I hope you are well! Today I have a fun mixed media tutorial to share, with dimensional flowers and a recycled background. You can use the techniques for other types of projects and surfaces too.

I created a wall-hanger out of a piece of packaging. It is 10 x 3.6 in, a fun tall surface to work on. The dimensional flowers were made with Simon Says Stamp Etched Evening Blossom die and I also used a bunch of Simon Says Stamp stamps. 

This is the original piece of packaging. It used to contain three Christmas tree ornaments which we got from Ikea sometime before Christmas. I saved it since I really like the three circles and the design with the spine.

After coating it with gesso, I painted the backgrounds with Distress Paints, misting with water to blend.

For the front, I added Cracked Pistachio, to make it stand out from the background inside the circles.

I marked where the center circle was with a pencil and stamped that area with the Simon Says Stamp Ledger Paper Background stamp. The sentiment comes from Document It. Above and below was stamped with the Old Letter Background.

I continued stamping on the front cover. The flowers from Anna's Flowers and Laugh In Flowers were stamped with orange, red and later also yellow Archival inks. I also stamped some sentiments and butterflies.

Circles were stamped with the Mix and Match Circles set and brown ink. Additional texture was added with the Crackle Background. I darkened the edges with a brown Distress Crayon.

A little Sizzix Gold Luster Wax was rubbed around the edges and on the inside edges of the circles.

Die cut the Etched Evening Blossom from old book paper, heavystock paper and Wendy Vecchi Clearly For Art Modeling Film. 

Ink with various Distress Inks in pink, red, orange and yellow shades.

Color the modeling film flowers with alcohol inks.

Shape the flowers with Tim Holtz Shaping Kit.

Heat with a heat tool and shape the flowers. Be careful not to burn yourself. The finished flowers keep their shape perfectly. 

Die cut the Etched Berry Branch from old book paper and Clearly For Art Modeling Film and the Etched Delicate Frond from heavystock paper.

Ink with Distress Inks and alcohol inks.

The butterflies were colored with pencils. Here you can also see the shine and texture from the gold wax.

I glued the panel together before adding the leaves and flowers, except for some of the leaves which go underneath the top panel.

This sentiment was the perfect size for the circle.

The combination of cardboard, gesso, paint, gold wax, stamping and Distress Crayons gives a nice texture to the background.

Don't worry if the stamping isn't perfect, it just adds to the distressed look.

I never grow tired of crackle texture.

The flowers are pretty dimensional and to make sure they were stuck to the background, I used a brad.
