Sprays and Splashes Art Journal Page

Hello friends! Summer is here and the sun has been shining for the past days. My bike has a flat tire which I need to fix so that we can go on bike outings. Today I have an art journal page to share with you, but it can also be turned into a card, just by scaling down the size.

It is Monday and at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog we have a new fun challenge for you. Our theme is Sprays and Splashes. Perfect for summer! I hope you will join us and don't miss the beautiful project by our June guest designer Sandra Rupp.

I worked in Dina Wakley's Blue Edition Media Journal this week. It has a mix of pages from different surfaces: heavy cotton-rag watercolor paper (the same paper as in the White Journal), jeans fabric pages, and light cream burlap. I started out with just the page to the right, but had three leftover butterflies, so I decided to splatter some paint on the jeans fabric page to the left and add the butterflies and a sentiment there. 

You see the details better if you look at just one page at a time. I used Dina's Gloss Sprays for the background, which are acrylic paint sprays. The butterflies are a combination of stamps and a die by SSS. To make a smaller version, just use one or two butterflies.

Place Tim Holtz Shifter Scallop stencil on one of the watercolor pages. Add printer paper around the stencil to prevent paint of getting everywhere. Mist with Lime, Turquoise and Ocean Gloss Sprays. Remove the stencil and clean it. Mist White Gloss Spray here and there.

Remove the sprayer from the mist and tap on it to create splatters. Do this with all the colors and mist water on top in a few areas. The water will turn the paint into watercolor, but only if you mist it before the paint is dry.

Die cut the Shimmer Butterfly from watercolor paper. Mist with three shades of Gloss Spray and finish with a layer of homemade glimmer mist (a tiny bit of Perfect Pearls powder into a mini mister filled with water).

Dip a paint brush into the Gloss Spray bottles and paint the butterflies. Cut out. I cut them out a little too roughly since I was planning to have put the vellum butterflies on to, only to later change my mind. There are coordinating dies for all the butterflies, which will make the cutting process quicker and more precise.

White emboss butterflies on vellum. Cut them out and color them at the back with Tombow markers.

Use the end of the sprayer to doodle on the page. I made trails for the butterflies and a border around the page.

I also stamped a small butterfly and Tim Holtz Ledger Script background stamp here and there with black ink.

If you look closely at the vellum butterflies, you can see that I didn't flick off the powder that got stuck a little here and there. Instead it was left and gives a great texture. 

Here you can see the effect of the Perfect Pearls mist better. I also used SSS Glimmery Cardstock to die cut the large SSS Big Happy word, giving even more glimmer to the page.

Using Tombow markers to color the back of vellum works great. I colored them roughly, but you can also blend the colors more smoothly.

Finally, I smeared some Moon Dust Stickles on the background here and there. It has larger pieces inside, which you can see here. For more using the new Ranger Stickles check out my Magical Gnome Forest and Ink, Stamps and Glitter tags.

 I particularly like the mix of larger watery splashes and the smaller more vibrant splatters.

The paint splatters look great on the jeans fabric too, in particular the white ones.
