A Wonderful Creature Tag

Hello friends! I hope you are well and that you had a good weekend. We had beautiful weather on Saturday and I finally walked the entire length of a walking path that I have been wanting to walk for a long time. I've just walked parts of it before and it was so nice to walk the whole thing, especially since the weather was perfect.

This week we have a It's a Dogs Life challenge at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog. I hope you will join us! And don't miss the post by our May guest designer Cath Wilson, with her gorgeous blog Inky Fingers

Layers of ink - A Wonderful Creature Tag Tutorial by Anna-Karin Evaldsson. Stamped and colored dog.

I made a tag this week featuring a cute and very friendly dog. The dog was stamped with a stamp by Darkroom Door and the background is inked with Distress Inks. You can easily turn this into a card instead, if you don't want to make a tag. The dog was colored with colored pencils, which work great for fur.

Start by stamping the Sitting Dog on a tag and on Simon Says Stamp Masking Paper. Cut the latter out.

Color the dog with colored pencils, trying to follow the curved lines of the fur. This gives the fur a lively look. I used Prismacolor pencils.

Put the mask over the dog to protect her from the inking. Ink the background with green and glue shades of Distress Ink, creating both grass and a sky.

When dry, place the Tim Holtz Linen stencil on top and ink the sky with Blueprint Sketch and Ground Espresso.

Stamp paw prints with the SSS Bone-A-Fide Birthday set and texture with the alphabet stamp from Tim Holtz School Desk set. That alphabet stamp is one of my all time favorite stamps.

Remove the mask and add a shadow with a black colored pencils. It makes a big difference when it comes to grounding the dog to the background.

Add details and highlights to the dog with a white gel pen.

Color two Heirloom Roses by adding a drop of alcohol ink to each one.

I also gave the tag a scribble border with a white gel pen.

The inking, stenciling and stamping gives a lot of depth to the background, even though it is all just one layer.

Make the shadow darker closer to the dog and fainter further away. I also added some grass with the white gel pen.

I like the porcelain look of these flowers.

The tag was finished with some Clippings Stickers.

  1. What a great tag. Your handwork on the pup makes him so realistic!

  2. What a cute stamp, and what a sweet tag. At first glance it looks quite simple but, I can see that there are lots of steps and details to create this tag. I can see why you like that alphabet stamp. It's perfect for background work. The shadow you made at the base of the dog really does anchor him and makes a big difference. As talented as always. TFS.
