CSI case file #63: Sewing Clothes

Hello! Thank you for stopping by my blog! Time for another CSI:Color, Stories, Inspiration challenge. Sizzix is sponsoring CSI this week, and there is of course a prize to be won. Here is this week's absolutely gorgeous case file:

I loved the inspiration photo, and decided to scrap about an old hobby of mine. I used to sew a lot of clothing as a child and teenager.

From the evidence items I used: ribbons, flowers, pearls, tape measure, vintage elements, lace, sewing, dress form, and from the testimony, I documented a hobby. I wrote a long piece of journaling which is tucked behind the photo. On this photo I am cutting my mom's clothing pattern paper with a pair of scissors, but the paper on my head hides that I had also cut my own hair. The tab to pull out the journaling was die cut with Tim Holtz new Mini Clipboard die.

I used watercolour paper for my base since I wanted something sturdy. A piece of clothes pattern paper was glued on top with multi-medium, wrinkling it as I went along. The paper was whitewashed with acrylic paint to tone it down a bit and I dry brushed a bit of brown paint on top here and there. Sewing mini blueprints and other sewing related stamps were stamped with Archival Jet Black. I also stamped some circles and dots with Juniper paint dabber (always clean your stamp immediately after stamping with paint). The edges were embossed with Stampendous Shabby Green Embossing Enamel and I also stitched around the edges and here and there on the page.

The title was stamped with Tim Holtz new Worn Text stamps and white embossed.

A lot of flowers were die cut with the Tattered Flower Garland from scraps of pink patterned papers and vellum. They were shaped and layered together.

Natural sticky-back canvas was adhered to mat board and three spools die cut from it. The spools were inked with Gathered Twigs and wrapped with twine. The pin in the middle twisted when I took the photo, it says 'memories' at the top.

To make the dress forms, I adhered natural sticky-back canvas to mat board and die cut them from that. They were inked with Gathered Twigs. When I was a child, I collected scrap pieces of fabric from my mom and used it to make doll clothing. I still have quite a bit of these scrap pieces and used it to make the dresses on this layout. These particular pieces comes from a fabric swatch book where I tore out all the fabric. I thought some were too pretty to use, so they were just collected or used as blankets and table clothes for dolls. I think these two flower patterns belonged to the latter. I stitched along the upper edge and pulled the threads together to shape the skirts a bit.

The small dress form was made the same way, using a smaller swatch of fabric.

Another of the flower clusters.

For a border at the bottom of the page I used cheese cloth, lace dyed with Victorian Velvet Distress Stain and a tape measure ribbon.

The journaling is long and is about my first memories of sewing together with my mom, the smells and sounds, all the dolls clothes I made, my first pair of trousers when I was about eight years old, the complicated jeans jacket and balloon skirt I made when I was twelve, and about all the clothes I made as a teenager. I've forgotten quite a bit about making clothes, and these days I almost only sew on paper.

Did you see that CSI has a design team call? I hope you will apply, it is a fabulous team to be a part of. You can read all about it here.

Thank you for the visit! Have a great weekend!
