Foxglove Tag Tutorial

Hi friends! Today I have a tag to share with a stamped and watercolored foxglove. It is a no-line watercolor project.

The tag is inspired by old vintage illustrations, but with some additional touches. I used watercolor pencils today, instead of paint or ink. Even though I used a no-line watercoloring technique, the initial ink is not invisible, but functions almost as an under painting giving shading to the flower and muting the colors somewhat.

Cut a tag from watercolor paper and ink the foxglove from Simon Says Stamp Foxglove stamp set with Pumice Stone ink. Mist with water before stamping. For a more subtle look, use Antique Linen instead.

Start coloring the flower with watercolor pencils, blending them as you go.

I built up layers with darker and more vibrant colors. Use the original stamping as a guide for where to place shadows and highlights.

Paint the area around the tag with light brown shades.

When dry, add dots and lines with a black pen, and highlights with a white gel pen. Paint ground for the flower to grow from.

Ink the edges and stamp the tag with Simon Says Stamp Old Letter Background using a light grey ink, Archival Smoke Grey, meant to look like pencil script.

If you look closely, the dots might look a bit messy, but from a distance they add definition, shading and texture to the flower.

The sentiment also comes from the Foxglove stamp set. I really like this sentiment (this is one of the sets that I designed).

Stamp the name of the flower on the background. Here you can see how the original stamping is still visible here and there through the watercoloring.
