Sleigh ride mini canvas

Hello everyone! I hope you have enjoyed the first week of the year. I have been busy finishing a big assignment, which is almost done and the boys have both been a little under the weather.

This week at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog we have a Winter Blues theme. Don't miss our January guest designer Amber Sheaves.

I really like silhouette stamps and I wanted to use the adorable Hero Arts Winter Silhouettes set. At first, I was planning to paint this scene in blue shades, but then 'inspired' by the grey and rainy weather we had during Christmas and New Year, I stuck to shades of grey. We had blue weather, without any blue at all (and no snow). Hopefully it will come, January is usually a better winter month than December. This canvas is only 3 x 3 in, so is is pretty tiny. It's the smallest board in the Ranger Dina Wakley Assorted Media Boards, but I managed to squeeze in quite a few techniques.

The proportions are a little off here, with the girl riding down the hill looking too large, but I figured that the trees are small instead, and that she is not far away from the boy and the dog. I almost removed her all together, but Anton liked her, so she is still riding down that hill.

I wish I had taken step photos, but I was in a hurry and, forgot to take photos of the first steps. The board was coated with gesso and then with a layer of Crackle Paste for the sky, and Texture Paste for the snowy hill.

I tore off a piece of tissue paper large enough to cover the entire board and stamped the kids and the trees on the paper. Gloss multi-medium was applied to the background and the tissue paper was carefully placed on top. Add another layer of gloss medium on top of the tissue paper. When it was dry, I painted it with white, grey and black acrylic paints.

On top of the snow, there is some Prima Snowflake Paste, which gives a textured and glimmery effect.

I also added some mica flakes, which is a favorite material of mine. It shimmers and shines so nicely, and works great for snow.

I wanted even more shine and applied a glue stick here and there on the background. Silver foil was rubbed on top, giving the effect that you see here. The foil especially sticks to the raised parts and gives a really nice shine. Finally, I splattered the canvas with white paint.

I hope you will join us this week in our Winter Blues challenge. As always, you have a chance to win a $50 gift voucher to do some fun shopping at Simon Says Stamp. You have until next Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in.

  2. I love your mini canvas, Anna-Karin. It reminds me of when I was a child growing up in Wisconsin. I use to pull my sled around in the snow with my dogs following not far behind. Good memories!
