Distress Oxide Layers Tutorial

Hello everyone! It is Monday again and of course we have a new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge for you and this week we have a Nautical theme. Perfect for this time of the year.

Funnily enough and without planning it, I have another whale project for you this week, after last week's Clear Whale Card. It is quite different from the card though and uses entirely different stamps and techniques. I worked in my art journal this week and had fun layering up a scene with Distress Oxide inks. The stamps come from Hero Arts Color Layering Blue Whale set.

After cutting a piece of watercolor paper, I masked off the top third with SSS Masking Paper.

I smeared blue shades of Distress Oxides on my craft sheet misted with water and repeatedly dipped the paper into the ink, making it darker towards the front and lighter towards the horizon. Dry the paper in between and vary the amount of pressure to sometimes only pick up splotches of color from the craft sheet. I also held the paper on its side and dripped down water with a pipette to create the look of waves that you see above.

When dry, apply masking paper over the sea and die cut a circle of masking paper for the sun.

Smear yellow and blue Distress Oxides on a craft sheet, trying to plan it so that the yellow will be mainly where the sun is. Mist with water and dip the sky into the ink. Unlike the sea, I didn't want texture here. Remove the sun mask.

Ink a round ink-blending tool with Fossilized Amber and press on the sun, dissolve with water and a paint brush. Also add a little yellow going across the sun. Stamp with the texture stamp from the Blue Whale Layering set on the sea to create a yellow reflection.

When dry, stamp with the wave stamp from the same set, using both shades of blue from Dina Wakley's Mixed Media palette.

I wanted the first layer of my whale to be really light and stamped it with Iced Spruce. Ink, mist with water, stamp once, mist with water again and stamp again. Use the impression you like the best (I used the lightest one).

When dry, stamp with Faded Jeans, this time without misting with water to keep the details sharp.

Ink the texture stamp with Salty Ocean, mist with water and stamp on the body of the whale.

Hold a piece of paper over the detailed areas of the whale to protect them and carefully mist a little bit of water on its back.

It is hard to capture the cool effect of the lighter ink and water on the back of the whale, but you might see it on this photo.

When dry, stamp the facial features with black ink Archival Ink. Cut out. There are also coordinating dies.

Repeat for the two small whales.

Leo also likes the whale - I get a lot of these types of photos when photographing my projects. :)

I also splattered the background with Picket Fence Paint and a splatter brush. You can see the effect of that on this photo.

This masking technique for the sun is fun and easy and can also be used for the moon.

As you can see here, I masked off a tiny strip of white along the horizon line, when masking the sea, to get the thin white line that you see. The boat should have been stamped a little closer for the sake of perspective.

I really like the cool texture of the sea created by the Oxide layering.

The sentiments and page number come from Tim Holtz's Clippings stickers. When I art journal on lose pages, I usually round two corners before adhering them to my art journals - in this case the Small Creative Dylusions Journal.
