Panda Coloring Book Tutorial

Hi friends! It is Monday again and of course time for a new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. This week our theme is Get in Shape, which can be interpreted in different ways. You could do something health related, for example, or focus on shapes.

Don't miss the fantastic project of our July guest designer, Beulah Bee.

I decided to go with shapes as my theme, and particularly a die that creates a nice shape, namely the SSS 3 Sided Scallop die. When Anton was two, I made a little coloring book for him and I wanted to do something similar for Leo. The scallop is a great shape for pages in a little book. The panda was an easy choice for the cover image, since Leo's favourite soft toy is a panda.

The 3 Sided Scallop is from the One of a Kind collection and is a very clever die, since it cuts three out of four sides, which makes it perfect for shaped cards or pages. To make the cover, you need some space for a spine, and I used the Sizzix Magnetic Platform to be able to easily line up the die on my paper and keep it in place. My first attempt had a too wide spine, but the one shown here worked better. It is about 1 cm. All the inside pages were die cut by folding a piece of paper and placing the die along the fold.

Stamp the Cool Panda on the front and emboss with clear powder.

Apply Distress Micro Glaze with your finger over the areas of the panda that needs to remain white.

Smear Distress Inks on a craft sheet, mist with water and pick up with a paint brush. Paint the cover. Since you applied the glaze, you don't need to worry about avoiding the panda since the glaze will resist the ink.

Since I used watercolor paper with a slight texture, and was pretty quick when applying the glaze, a little bit of blue still got stuck to the panda. I liked it like that, since it gave him some texture.

Punch holes in the spine with a Crop-a-dile and set eyelets in the holes, if you want to. Pierce holes through all the inside pages and place them in pairs of two or three into signatures. Tie with twine.

I stamped the inside pages with all kinds of fun images, trying to pick things that Leo likes (animals, vehicles and fruit). He calls his panda 'annie' and 'annia' which is why I wrote that here with alphabet stamps.

I used watercolor paper for my book, so he can color with watercolor paint too, or with crayons.

I used mainly stamps by SSS and Hero Arts. You can find them all below in the supply list.

Birds are a big favourite too.

And of course, there had to be lions.

If you make this for a bigger child, you can add text or maybe numbers, to make it more interesting and educational.

A small stamp can be stamped more than once, such as this Little Sheep by Hero Arts.

These Birthday Farm Animals are such fun.

And there had to be an airplane. Leo loves his book, and keeps looking through it to find the airplane on the last page.

The back of the book, kept simple.

The 3 Sided Scallop is great for cards and gives immediate interest to quick cards like these, that we made to Leo's teachers. I used the Fingerprint Doodles set, but instead of using the print stamps in the set, Leo stamped the bodies of the animals with his finger.

Pink lions. The sentiment comes from the same stamp set.
