Transportation Memory Game Tutorial

Hello friends! Welcome to another Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge post here on my blog. We spent a large part of the weekend swimming and cycling. I try to make the best of the good weather.

I took my project in a bit of a different direction and made a travel game, but it can of course also be used at home. It has a transportation theme, which also works for a vacation challenge. When Anton was little, I made him a memory game - you can find that post here - and I thought Leo should have his own game. He is still too small for memory, but I made the game in such a way that he can still have fun with the cards, and practice shapes, words and colours. He loves airplanes in particular, but also any kind of vehicle.

I thought it was a fun idea to make the cards circular instead of the more common square format. The circles were die cut with the largest of Tim Holtz Sizzix Sized Circles dies, from white Little Sizzles Mat Board. It is important that the back of the cards look the same and I stamped them all with the ZigZag stamp. Put the stamp on a table, ink it and press the cards on top.

For the shapes, I used Tim's Cityscape Commute set which has all these cute vehicles (and more). I die cut them from color-core and kraft-core cardstock.

The cards were stamped with alphabet stamps: 'airplane', 'car', 'truck' etc. but also 'brown' and 'red'.

To protect the cards I coated them on the back and front with Multi Medium Matte.

The cards can be tied with an elastic - just make sure they are totally dry so that they don't stick together.

I might later make a box for Leo's cards, since Anton has a box for his cards.

The cards immediately caught Leo's attention when I was photographing them for this post. Here you see a little hand pointing at the airplane. For more about his airplane interest, check out the Stamped Passport Book tutorial that I posted last week.

I love the shapes of the vehicles in the Commute set, such as this helicopter.

I used different colors, so that he can practice colors at the same time, but kept most of them tone-on-tone, so that each vehicle would be one color.

You can of course make these much more elaborate if you'd like to, but I kept them simple, since he is so small still.

There are eight set of cards, sixteen cards in total.

 The zigzag made for a fun background.

Here you see all of them. This type of game is easy to customize to fit the interest of the child. You could add animals, people, flowers, trees, or anything else you could think of.

The kids started playing with the cards before I had even finished photographing them (I had to take the remaining photos the next day).
