Pastel Distress Crayon Tutorial

Hello friends! Was your weekend fun? I hope so! We had a busy weekend with birthday parties, sport practice and we also went on a steam train ride. I really tried to get a photo of it without lots of people standing around in front, but I don't think I quite succeeded. I love old trains, and all the fun details in the old carriages.

This week at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge, we are Inspired by Music. I was planning to do something different, but this art journal page got a life of its own.

I got the idea for this page one of the mornings last week. Since Anton started big school, we have an earlier morning routine and we are not quite used to it yet. The mornings are not always as peaceful as I wish they would be and it can be quite a mission to get everybody ready and out of the door in time.

So I did an art journal page about an ideal pastel coloured, peaceful and harmonic morning, starting with a song. It was also inspired by an emboidered piece my grandmother had in her kitchen, translating 'The morning has gold in its mouth'.

I got the two new sets of Distress Crayons the other day, and used mainly Set 5, with its pastel shades here, as well as Squeezed Lemonade and Mustard Seed. Working in my Dylusions Journal, I first gessoed a page and when dry, scribbled Distress Crayons on top.

I wanted a sunrise on my page and used Tim Holtz Rays stencil. Use a slightly moist cloth and wipe off colour through the stencil.

I wanted the rays to extend all the way to the top of my page and used two stencils as masks, lining them up with each ray of light and wiping off the area in between.

I also used the Cargo and Bubbles stencils to remove more colour.

Mist lightly with water and press a paper towel on top (check out this Distress Crayon Texture tutorial of mine for more on this technique).

Mist with Pearl Mica Spray. You can get a hint of the shine and glimmer on this photo. This morning would be all shimmery.

When dry, I stamped the background with a music stamp and both Shadow Grey and Forget-me-not Archival Ink, as well as a number stamp and Shadow Grey ink.

I wanted to create the feeling of a happy and free morning, showing the potential of the day to come, and thought birds would do the trick. This pretty bird was stamped with Forget-Me-Not ink. The sentiment from Uplifting Thoughts was stamped with Jet Black.

I also stamped my favourite flying bird stamp using the same ink, and second and third impressions. More journaling was stamped with alphabet stamps.

The Sketch Heart was die cut from gold Deco Sheet, for golden shine. Have you seen that Simon Says Stamp released Glimmery Cardstock and envelopes during STAMPtember? It is awesome, and very glimmery. I die cut the word from it.

The Cottage Stems die is also a new STAMPtember die, and it is so pretty. I die cut two of them from purple and pink glimmery cardstock, and the seeds from blue and yellow.

The seeds fit perfectly behind as you can see here. They add a great detail to this die.

I also used some Symphony Tissue Tape, and two kinds of German Scraps by Prima. I always liked German Scrap and I was happy to see Prima having them now.

The journaling was stamped with alphabet stamps, and the oval die cut frame comes from the Frames set.

I die cut the title ('The morning has gold in its mouth') from glimmer cardstock and gold Deco Sheet, using the Wanted die. The rest of the title was stamped, so that it wouldn't take too much space.

Smile usually has a circle around it (I used it on my Hydrangea Art journal page, for example), but for this page, I cut off the circle, using only the word.

The crayon, stenciling and soft stamping add layers and texture to the page.

  4. It was a good surprise to see that you have a Danish morning song on your journal page, it was a song we started our day at school at least once a week. A delightful and beautiful page and gives the Scandinavian atmosphere. Hugs, Susan
