Owl in Winter Window

Hi friends!! Only a few days to Christmas, December seems to have just disappeared. It is Monday again, and this week we have winter challenge at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog

Layers of ink - Owl in Winter Window by Anna-Karin
As you probably know, I love to make shadow boxes and this week I made a winter window, as a home for a sweet owl. Most of the products come from Prima. I really like their resin owls and they are fun to colour too. The shadow box is the smallest one in the wooden square tray set. I was in a hurry this week, and didn't take any step photos, but I'll try to explain how I made this.

The box was coated with gesso and painted with Picket Fence and Pumice Stone. I stamped the Finnabair window on tissue paper, and stamped around it with a rock texture stamp. When the paint was dry, I painted the box with gloss multi-medium, carefully placed the tissue paper on top and then added another layer of multi-medium over the tissue. After that dried, I added more paint and shading, such as around the window. This step makes a big difference to the appearance of the box. When the paint was dry, I stamped the stone texture here and there again, to bring it out.

At the bottom of the box, I smeared Snowflake Paste and sprinkled micro beads, ordinary beads, sequins and mica flakes on top. I liked the mixture of small shiny pieces. Press lightly to make sure they are stuck.

At the top, I glued Tim Holtz icicles with matte multi-medium and smeared more Snowflake Paste on top. I love the look of the icicles.

Inside the box, I applied white crackle paste, and some 3-D gel. Micro beads were sprinkled into the gel.

I added some crackle paste to the sides of the box too. When it was dry, I painted it with watered down Pumice Stone. Finally, when everything was dry, the project got some extra shine with silver Ranger foil. Apply Collage Glue stick here and there, wait to let it dry slightly and then press the matte side of the foil on the glue. For another example, using foil, check out my Frozen Deer canvas tutorial.

The owl was painted with Distress Paint, adding darker dry-brushing with Black Soot and Hickory Smoke.

I added some Snowflake Paste to the our, a few mica flakes and later also a tiny bit of foil here and there.

I was happy with the combination of the sparkly Snowflake Paste, shimmering mica flakes, crackles, shiny foil and metallic beads.

I found a stick in the garden and painted it with some white paint. A bit of Snowflake Paste and foil were also added to the stick.

The sentiment comes from the Brush stamp by Finnabair and was stamped with Jet Black ink.

When the paste was dry, I screwed to eye screws into the top and tied a twine between them.

I hope you will join us in our winter challenge. As always you have a chance to win a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp. This is a two week challenge, since we are taking a short break over Christmas. You have until the following Monday 8am Ohio time. 1pm UK time, 2 pm CET to join in.
