Book of Random Things

Hello everyone! STAMPtember® continues at Simon Says Stamp with fun things happening every day. We have another stamping challenge at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog this week, namely to stamp on other surfaces than ordinary paper. Lots of options: acetate, chipboard, canvas, wood, metal and so much more.

 

I couldn't just stop at one non-paper surface, so this will be a long post. I stamped on: acetate, wood, frosted film, fabric, canvas, metal, vellum and photos.

I love this worn cover by Tim Holtz and decided to use to make a mixed album, using mainly scraps. I use my scraps often since I find that I can finish a project quicker when I dig into my scrap box. When I try out techniques, I often end up with more paper than what I use on a project and these are great bases for new project. The idea behind this album is to use scraps, to make quick pages, and also to use those odd photos, perhaps leftover from a layout, or quotes leftover from another project. I had lots of fun decorating the cover with different bits and pieces.

The frame was die cut from Simon Says Stamp wonderful Birch wood veneer paper, using the Baroque and Mini Baroque dies. I coloured the frame with Tumbled Glass Distress Stain and stamped it with a Tim Holtz text stamp, using Stazon ink. The frame was die cut a second time from black cardstock, which was placed as a shadow. The title was stamped with various alphabet stamps and Black Soot Distress Paint. I found that paint stamped the best on the fabric cover of the journal. Always remember to clean your stamp immediately after using it with paint.

Most of the grungeboard shapes were in my scrap box and had already been painted with Rock Candy Crackle Paint. I coloured them with Distress Stains.

Corners were gold embossed aiming for a distressed look. The compass was painted with Antique Linen Distressed Paint and lightly sanded to reveal the metal. The little hitch fastener was screwed to the cover.

I added rub-ons both to the cover and to some of the crackly die cuts. The flowers were dyed with Distress Stain.

Both the gears and the painted key hole were already in my scrap box, all I had to do was add colour to the gears.

On the spine, I added rub-ons for a title and two crackle butterflies.

I wanted the inside to be lighter than what it originally was and painted it with Antique Linen Distress Paint, adding some dry brushing with Walnut Stain. The orange rings were stamped with Distress Paint, which sticks to almost anything and the rest of the stamping was done with Archival Jet Black ink.

For a binder, I used Tim's large ring binder, which means that I can easily add more pages and change the order of the pages. I coloured it with Ginger and Pitch Black alcohol ink.

This is the back cover, which I left plain. The brushes were stamped with Distress Ink, first misting the stamp lightly with water. This gave a less detailed look than the stamping with Distress Paint.

Let's look at some of the pages. I thought it would look nice with some frosted film pages and added two together back to back. It is hard to photograph, but they look real nice in real life. I stamped them with Distress Paint and a dot stamp.

I also wanted some canvas pages and adhered natural sticky-back canvas back to back. It was coloured with Gelatos and stamped with Distress Paint.

Another great material to stamp on is metal. I adhered foil tape to glossy cardstock and stamped it with a text stamp and Stazon ink. You can use Archival Ink too, but Stazon dries faster. I embossed it in a gears folder and coloured with Distress Paint.

Transparent pages add interest to mini-books and I had a piece of acetate in my scrap box which had already been stamped with Platinum Stazon ink.

I also love the look of white stamping on acetate, and Stazon Cotton White works really well for that - or try to use white paint.

 

I have a lot of tags on which I have tried different techniques, this one came from Tim's 12 tags of 2013 July. I stamped it with Archival Inks.

These are some of the pages I decided to use, apart from the ones already shown above, there is a gelli printing page and a leftover from a wax crayon resist tutorial.

More of the pages, and the back of some of the pages above. Canvas, text paper, embossed paper, a walnut stain tag, a tag leftover from another project, more acetate stamping and a Distress Paint tag.

These were all in my scrap file, Distress Paint, more wax resist, various watercolour papers, heat embossed background and some journaling cards.

I made some these into finished pages.

Leftover small photos from layouts often disappear and this one was too cute not to use.

 

I love this photo of my dad, his friends and their bikes and used it on the gear page, together with a fence, bird, arrow and other bits and pieces, all found in my scrap box.

 

Even this photo of me was already cut out and in my scrap box (I think it was too small for the layout I was planning to have used it on). I am sitting on some Tattered Floral flowers and a quote ticket, with a white embossed vellum butterfly fluttering by. I used the white stamped acetate as a page and you can peak the metal page behind it.

 

Another photo that didn't make it onto a layout, taken on one of my favourite bike routes. I combined it with a left over quote from my Dotty ATC Gelli Print Book.

 

In the book, these pages look like this. Since they are transparent, you can see other pages behind them.

The frosted film page turned into a great surface for leftover lake photos, stamped with a sentiment stamp. The Birds on a Wire were in my scrap box too.

 

I used another lake photo on the other side, together with a little tag, a vellum cloud and a title.

On the canvas page, I used a leftover photobooth photo of my dad, sister and me, together with the second half of a picture wheel, a love die cut and an acetate stamped clock.

 

All these items were in my scrap box, as was the quote.

 

Finally, I also used a photo of my grandfather and some embellishments that fit together with him, a vintage camera, hearts and an old postcard.

There are still lots of pages ready to be embellished in the book, and I can add more if I want to. I am planning to do a page now and then, using mainly leftover items. It is going to be such a fun mixed book when it is finished.
