Collage Pop-Up Card

Hello! Since it is April Fool's Day today, anything goes at Simon Says Stamp and Show this week. Fun! But also difficult, since I tend to have a hard time picking one of many ideas for the anything goes challenges.

 

We loved to think out fun jokes and pranks on April Fool's Day as children, such as when we gave my dad an uncooked egg for breakfast. To make a mess, my youngest sister came up with the idea of opening the eggs in a different way than we normally did - namely by chopping off the top with a quick spoon action. She suggested that everybody did this, and my dad's egg, which was raw, made quite a mess. 

 

And onto my project, a gatefolded double pop-up card:

 

I knew I wanted to do a pop-up card with surprises on the inside, but was planning something bright and funny. I sat down without a plan and started gluing pieces of map paper, dictionary paper and old book paper on a large piece of manila cardstock. The project didn't want to be bright and funny, but rather a grungy collage card.

The card is gatefolded and I placed one of Karen Burniston's Sizzix fun Circle & Ribbon Platform pop-ups in each fold. I called the card 'Faces from the Past' since there are many old photos on the papers and stamps that I used.

After gluing all the papers down with multi-medium, I whitewashed the whole background with Picket Fence Distress Paint, which is perfect for this since it is such a fluid paint. The whitewashing toned down the colours of the map paper and also brought all the different papers together. I also applied a little bit of watered down brown paint, lots of Tim Holtz stamps and finally paint splatters.

The dictionary paper I happened to use had some old photographs included and I used them as inspiration for the whole piece. Love the bulb blueprint stamp.

The base of the pop-ups were die cut from Tim Holtz Destinations patterned paper, and the circle and ribbons from manila cardstock. The cardstock was inked with Distress Stains before die cutting and stamped with a script stamp. The pointing hand was stamped on top with Jet Black ink, pointing down to the second pop-up.

On the other pop-up I stamped two of the three gentlemen from Tim's Steampunk set and ChitChat stickers were adhered to both pop-ups. The pop-ups were not assembled until the card was finished. It is very easy to assemble them since the die both cuts and scores the pop-ups and there are clear instructions on the packaging for how to adhere the ribbons. It is really easy, but looks complicated, and gives a real fun look to the card.

 

I used Tim's new Simple Sayings here and there, a blueprint key, a large sentiment stamp and a compass. The ticket stamp on the Going Somewhere set coordinates perfectly with the new Mini Ticket strip die and was stamped on inked tickets die cut from manila. 

 

Here you can see the card as it looks when completely flat (12x7 in). When folded it is 7x6 in, so it is a pretty large card.

There is of course also a card front. I used the new Picture Wheel on the front, together with photos from Tim's Lost & Found paper, which fit perfectly. I actually liked it even better on a tutorial I did after this card, but posted before it, where I used my mom's childhood photos, you can find it here.

The background was done the same way as on the inside, except that I didn't cover the top part with collage papers, but still whitewashed it.

I cut the Picture Wheel from a piece of cardstock that had been covered with foil tape. It was coloured with alcohol inks (ginger, lettuce, juniper, espresso) and I sprinkled  Vintage Photo Distress Embossing powder here and there and melted it. I dripped on some more alcohol ink. This gives a cool rusty effect. A clock stamp was perfect for the centre and of course a Game Spinner (you might know that I like to use these).

The title was stamped with the new Worn Text alphabet stamps and Archival Jet Black.
