Tattered Florals challenge

Tim Holtz has a fun challenge to use the Tattered Florals die, and since this is one of my favourite dies, I just had to play along.

Two years ago I made a mixed metal Tattered Floral flower and placed it on a small canvas (10x10 cm). It's been displayed on a little shelf at my desk since then, and as I read about the challenge I just happened to have the same size blank canvas on my desk. I was inspired by my previous canvas (see the end of the post) to create a new one.  

Here's my finished new canvas showcasing a dry embossed canvas/metal/modeling film/tulle tattered flower. The background was painted with watered-down acrylic paint (Sandal, Pebble and Mushroom) and I used one of my favourite sentiment stamps from Tim Holtz.

Here are the different flowers before assembly. I forgot to take step-by-step photos. I covered white modeling film with white sticky-backed canvas and cut four flowers and one tattered leaf from that. Another piece of white modeling film was covered with a foil sheet and another four flowers and one leaf was die cut from that. One metallic flower was die cut with the Mini Tattered Florals dies. I also cut flowers and leaves from tulle. Most of the flowers were dry embossed using different embossing folders. 

The canvas flowers and leaf were inked with Distress Inks (Tumbled Glass, Peacock Feathers, Broken China, Gathered Twigs and Peeled Paint). The ink is darker on the embossed areas. I misted them with Biscotti Perfect Pearls for some shine (doesn't show well on the photos). The metallic flowers were painted with Sunset Orange, Sunshine Yellow and Aqua and sanded to distress them and reveal the metal.

The flowers were heated with a heat gun one at a time and shaped. Be careful not to burn yourself. The modeling film keeps its shape perfectly. Love that stuff. Try not to reheat the flowers since the dry embossing can disappear then.

I placed a metallic Idea-ology flower in the centre and alternated the different materials and colours. The flower was glued to the canvas with hot glue.

The birds and dots were embossed with platinum embossing powder, which I've really enjoyed using lately. This bird stamp is a favourite of mine, I use it a lot.

This is my old tattered florals canvas, made two years ago. I used a sheet of copper, copper mesh, metallic mesh, and a foil covered piece of cardstock to make it. The foil pieces were stamped with a script stamp before they were embossed and the copper pieces were embossed and distressed with black paint. The canvas was painted with watered-down acrylic paints and the swirls and birds were silver embossed.
