Beach watercolour scene

This is my second DT project for Craft a Scene, with the June theme being Beach: a bit of sand and water. I hope you can play along with us!

I painted a watercolour background (on watercolour cardstock), starting with a pale wash of yellow and blue for the sky, then masking the horizon line with masking tape. I used a white wax crayon on the water first, to create the white highlights. The crayon marks resists the paint. The sand was painted with Raw Sienna, adding a bit of Burnt Umber and Ultramarine in the foreground, to make it darker. The dark mix was also dry brushed here and there on the sand to create texture. Stones were scratched out with a craft knife and I added a little shadow at each stone.

The boy was stamped with Archival Jet Black ink and then painted with red watercolour. He was cut out and glued to the sand, painting a bit of shadow on the sand. The birds were stamped with Faded Jeans Distress Ink and the grasses with Frayed Burlap and Archival Ink Coffee, the latter was also used for the sentiment. Finally, I added some tiny shells to the scene.
