Layered Shaker Card Tutorial

Hi friends! It is Monday again and I hope you had a good weekend. We had a lot of sports related activities for Anton this weekend, but at least one of the mornings were quiet. My least favorite part of school mornings is the rush of getting out of the door in time.

This week at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog we have a Resist It theme. Don't miss the last project by our creative January guest designer, Amber Sheaves.

Resist techniques are some of my favourite techniques. They often have great results and are sometimes a little unpredictable, which I like. There are also so many different resist techniques. This week, I decided to use Ranger's Distress Micro Glaze together with an Impresslits folder by Sizzix to create a shaker card. I hadn't done a shaker card in a really long time and it was a lot of fun. The shaker itself has several different layers, which you will see better in the step below.

I used the Bohemian Heart Impresslits folder. The Impresslits folders embosses and die cuts at the same time. The embossing folder has a built in die, so you don't need to worry about lining anything up. It makes it very quick and easy to get this intricate look. The folder is by Courtney Chilson. I used watercolor paper.

Apply a thin layer of Distress Micro Glaze over the embossed areas, using your finger. You only need a little, and don't worry about getting it perfect.

Mist the paper with Distress Spray Stain, or use another waterbased product. The ink won't stick to the areas with glaze.

Mist another piece of paper with Candied Apple and a little Pearl Mica Spray. When dry, die cut with the brand Shiny Hearts SSS die, from the brand new Love release. Plan approximately where to place the die by putting the die cut heart panel on top. I also die cut some Clipping Hearts from left-over misted red paper and used on the front of the card.

I was sure that I had taken a photo of the stamped acetate, but I seem to have forgotten. Stamp Clearly for Art Modeling Film or acetate with a text stamp and Cotton White Stazon ink. I used the Texture Iron Orchid stamp by Prima. Tape it behind the window and add foam tape strips all around. Place sequins, micro beads and mica flakes inside. Glue die cut Clipping Hearts to the red misted paper and adhere behind the shaker. You need to add a small piece of acetate behind the small die cut heart too, to prevent things from falling out.

The layers of stamped acetate, sequins, beads and mica, and die cuts glued to and die cut from the background gives an interesting look to the shaker.

The Clipping Heart were die cut from shimmery Brite-Ons paper by Sizzix.

The small heart die cut from the background, lets the SSS White Diamond Glimmery cardstock used for the cardbase show through.

The resist effect from the Distress Micro Glaze is pretty random and gives great texture to the background, at the same time as it makes the patterns in the embossing folder more visible.

  1. Wow! I really love that one. The mix of yellows and reds is so sunny and warm! I love the resist technique and I see I need to discover all those cool techniques that could be done with micro glaze. I don't use it enough. I love the crazy pattern of the embossing folder and the way you showcased the embossed parts. Hugs, Macarena.

  7. What a cool shaker Anna-Karin. I bought some of that glaze after seeing Kristina Werner use it on her water coloured envelopes and haven't opened it yet. Another great way to use it. I guess it's time to crack that baby opened and start using it.

  16. This is so cool. I love warm color combos so much. But I really like the way the micro glaze resist gives this a sort of batik look. At least that's how it looks to me. Gorgeous.
