Panda Card Tutorial

Hi friends! I hope your weekend was good and I hope that everyone who has been in the path of hurricane Irma is safe.

We had a pretty quiet weekend of going to a market and seeing friends. The leaves are starting to turn yellow and beautiful fall is here.

The celebration of STAMPtember continues at Simon Says Stamp and today an exclusive stamp and stencil set was released by Tim Holtz. I really like the mix of Christmas stamps, and the versatile stencil with one sentiment and two patterns. Later today, I will be back with a project made with this set. You can also see the rest of the STAMPtember® release here.

This week at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge, we have an It's in the Stars theme. I love to include stars in my projects since they are very versatile, similar to hearts.

I have another project to share using new STAMPtember products today. Panda bears have a special place in our family since Leo's one and only favorite soft toy is a panda bear. It took a long time before he cared about soft toys, and the only one that captured his heart is a panda bear, now called 'Annie' or 'Annia' (coming from when we used to call it 'Pandie'). I found this card in another room of the house yesterday since Leo had borrowed it from my desk because of the panda.

It's a quick and easy card and the background technique can also be used on other types of projects. With different colors, you can turn this winter card into a card for any season.

These are the two STAMPtember products that I used, the Picture Book Panda, and the Christmas Sweater Background stamp.

Start by white embossing the Christmas Sweater Background on watercolor paper. Don't worry about getting a perfect impression.

Here's comes the fun part. Scribble lines over the embossed image using Dina Wakley's Scribble Sticks. At this stage, the background doesn't look very impressive.

But magic happens when you add water to the Scribble Stick pigment. Apply water with a paint brush, working one line at a time and blend it slightly with the colors adjacent to the line. Distress the edges. Die cut two vellum pieces with the Eyelet Arch Borders die. Tear the bottom edges.

Die cut one Picture Book Panda from Sizzix white Paper Leather and one from black Paper Leather. You can also use cardstock. I pressed the die into white Paper Leather with my hand, and cut inside the outer impression with a pair of scissors. This piece was used as a base and you don't see it at all, but it makes it easier to glue the pieces together. Color the eyes blue and add a black dot.

Add a white gel pen dot to the center of the black dot to give the eyes life and then coat with Glossy Accents.

I die cut the SSS You're a Star from white Glimmery Cardstock, and also used the stars from the same die. When I was done with the card, I thought it needed something more, and added idea-ology Mirrored and metal stars.

The mix of different stars gives more interest to the card. The edges of both the watercolor panel and the background cardstock were distressed. I also stitched around the panel with my sewing machine.

This background is so quick and easy to do and there is no mess at all with the Scribble Sticks.

I just love the look of this cute panda. The STAMPtember release contains a whole bunch of animal die cuts similar to this one.

Tuck the panda in between the two vellum layers.

The Glossy Accents makes the eyes look real, but was hard to capture on a photo since the eyes are so small.

  5. I was drawn to the background, it looks so soft and cozy (like a real sweater) and your technique for creating it does look easy and very effective with a highly patterned background stamp. I am anxious to try this technique.
