Writing Recipe Box

Hello everyone! Today I have a project to share with you made with Eileen Hull's Recipe Box die by Sizzix.

The Recipe Card Box is such a great die. If you want to see a tutorial using this die, I posted one here. I made a little box about the power of the written word and I am planning to add quotes to it later. All the stamps are by Tim Holtz. I made this box probably over a year ago, and I have shared just a photo of it in another post about Eileen's Vintage Kitchen dies, but realised I had forgotten to post this full post.

The box was die cut from cream mat board. I stamped it with various images in black. The same images were stamped again on a sticky note and used as masks when I inked the box.

When the inking was done, I removed the masks and added some colour to the stamped images, as well as shadows. The scrip alphabet was white embossed on top (remember to let the Distress Ink dry first, otherwise the embossing powder will stick everywhere).

I also stamped with a splatter stamp and splattered some Black Soot ink here and there. Some details were enhanced with a glitter gel pen.

The pen nib was distressed with Black Soot paint.

The back of the box looks like this, with a typewriter taking center stage.

The embossing and splatters add texture to the project.

I stamped all the edges of the box too. It is easiest to do the stamping and inking before you assemble the box.

The Scoreboards dies both cuts and scores the material, making them easy to assemble. I tied the box with a string, but you could also use Velcro or a little magnet.

I am just going to toss some quotes into this box, as I come across them, to have them ready to use on other projects.

Thank you so much for stopping by today!

Happy crafting!!

  2. I remember this and it lovely to see it in all it's glory Anna-Karin, the colours and stamping are wonderful and the pen nib is a great finishing touch. This is such a great die! Anne xx

  3. I adore your idea of turning the recipe box die into a little box of quotes! I love my quotes so this would be perfect for me . You have chosen ideal images to depict your idea behind the box - 'the power of the written word ' . The colours you have chosen to use give your box a lovely vintage feel and the string tie is perfect .Thankyou for such sharing such a inspirational project x

  4. This is a great creation, I love it madly! I do not know how you do to create so many wonders! Fantastic project and fantastic you!

  5. I really love what you did with your recipe box! It's just amazing, but I have a few questions.

I would like to know how you decide on placement of stamps, coloring, theme? I have been "collecting" all sorts of things to alter and want to start so badly, but I just don't know where to begin or what to do?

I love the back of your box with the typewriter too! The picture is kind of deceiving; I mean it appears really large, so I checked out your link to the stamp set and still don't have an idea of the size? I know this is for recipes so I'm guessing it's a little larger than an index card?

I also have a lot of matboard scraps I could use, but my matboard is textured, you know like with a canvas type of texture. Is this how your matboard is? I couldn't tell from the pics.

I just want to create something, anything, but it's like I'm frozen, stuck, can't come up with anything. Maybe this is a sign I'm not creative enough or have no business even attempting to alter? LOL

I guess I'm trying to ask how do you come up with your ideas? How do you know where to begin or when to stop?

I really appreciate any advice or help you could offer. I guess the fact you're a designer/professional, has a lot to do with how beautiful your box turned out. Thanks a million!! :-)

    1. Thank you for your comment Christina! The mat board I use doesn't have any texture, it is perfectly smooth. Sizzix sells it, but you can probably find other similar brands. If your mat board is textured, try covering it with smooth paper first, to make the stamping and inking easier.

Sometimes, it is easy to feel overwhelmed if you have a lot products and don't know where to start. How about picking out one set of stamps and maybe three inks and just stamp and ink pieces of paper? It doesn't have to become finished projects. Perhaps use tags or small cards.

The finished box is a little larger than 3 x 4 inches.

This wasn't a stepped tutorial, so I didn't got into so much detail regarding the placement of stamps etc. If you look at my tutorials, you can find many different projects using mainly stamps and ink, as this one does.

When it comes to inspiration, colours and themes, it differs so much for each project, that it is hard to write about it briefly. I find inspiration everywhere and often play around with colours and design until I am happy.

I hope that answered some of your questions!

  6. It's so pretty! I have projects too that I need to post in full. I see what you mean...our recipe boxes are so similar. HEHE...Great minds think alike I guess.

  7. This is wonderful ... would you please let us know what size the finished box is ... in inches if possible ... thanks

    1. Hi Linda! The box is a little more than 3 in wide and 4 in high. 3 x4 in cards fit perfectly inside.
